A note from Arif

The two professional passions and interests I have are Investment Banking, especially Derivatives and Software development. I realised my love of software when I was at University and I had to do a Maths elective, so I choose programming 101 as the professor had a reputation for being easy on his students. Within 3 weeks of the course ( Pascal on a VAX PDP 11 ) I had completed the textbook and was hungry for more so I added a degree in Computer Science to my Bachelors in International Business. I also realised my love of Derivatives when I studied financial instruments at University and was fascinated at how the Risk was Managed and how Derivatives can be used in various strategies such as Straddles, Strangles etc in order to achieve various investment objectives,
Today I combine both these interests by specialising in Software solutions for Investment Banks. The technology has changed somewhat as back in the day we used Cobol 85 and C and now I mainly work in C++, Java and Scala, but I still love FinTech.

The world has changed significantly since I started my career in 1991 but those changes have been fascinating to watch and interesting to learn. As computing power has increased in line with Moores Law, so what we can do with that power has changed. The way we look at Risk in Banking now is completely different to the simple models we used back in the day.
